Connemaras in winter

You often hear that winter without snow is not photogenic. Everything is slushy, grey and freezing cold, they say.

Let me prove you wrong with this series of pictures taken in just one morning. This is the third time Hanna has booked me to photograph her Connemara ponies and her warmblood gelding. Of course, that always makes me particularly happy! The weather forecast indicated a bit of fog and sun, my favourite conditions for taking photos.

Winter, even without snow, has a very special beauty - and some advantages, especially when the ground is frozen.

An important aspect is that this is the feel-good temperature for many horses. They are full of energy, which is wonderful for pictures in motion (of course only if the surface allows it).

The light in winter is particularly soft and delicate. There are no harsh shadows as we know them from summer. With a bit of luck, you can create magical, almost mystical lighting moods, like here. We didn't even have to get up early for this - the light only came through the forest at around ten o'clock. If you observe the lighting mood for a few days, you will find the right time for the photo shoot.

The world in winter is cloaked in soft earthy colours. If you tend to avoid bright colours (and I rarely have them anyway), you'll love the calm colours of winter.

Winter fur is seen by many as a disadvantage, but there is something very special about ponies in particular. Nothing is more beautiful than their fluffy winter coat, which speaks of warmth and security.
